Burlington Locksmith FAQs
The key is missing. The lock still works. Do you really need to replace it? Questions like that deserve a proper answer. At Burlington Locksmiths, we bring about 20 years in the business to home, vehicle and workplace lock problems across Burlington, ON. Here are some answers to help you work out what you need.
Booking, Prices and Urgent Help
How much does a locksmith cost in Burlington?
The price depends on the job, the lock or vehicle involved, the parts needed and when you need help. Opening a door with the keys inside is a different job from making a car key when every copy is missing.
For a useful estimate, describe the problem and give your location. Check what the price includes: the visit, labour, any parts and applicable tax. A low starting price on its own doesn't tell you what the finished job will cost.
Will I get a price before the work starts?
Yes. Burlington Locksmiths will explain the proposed work and price before starting. Sometimes we need to see the lock before confirming what it needs. If the inspection changes the original estimate, that should be discussed with you before the extra work goes ahead.
Is there a 24-hour locksmith in Burlington?
Yes. We offer emergency locksmith help 24 hours a day. Call to check current availability at your address and whether the timing affects the charge.
How quickly can a locksmith get to me?
Call for the current arrival estimate. Your location, traffic and work already under way affect the timing. There isn't one honest arrival time that fits every call from Aldershot to Alton Village. If you're waiting outside, say so at the start of the conversation.
Do you cover Oakville, Hamilton and Waterdown too?
Yes. Burlington Locksmiths serves those communities as well as Burlington. Our nearby service areas also include Milton, Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Dundas and Grimsby. Give us the full address so we can confirm the visit for your particular job. For a car in a large car park, the entrance or parking section helps too.
Can you open my house door without replacing the lock?
Often, yes. Being locked out doesn't automatically mean the lock needs replacing. The options depend on the lock, its condition and why the door won't open. We'll assess it first. A working lock with the keys left indoors is quite different from one with broken parts inside.
House Keys and Business Doors
Should I rekey or change the locks after moving?
Rekeying is worth considering when the existing locks are in good condition and you want the old keys to stop working. Replacement makes more sense if the hardware is worn, damaged or unsuitable for what you need.
Suppose you like the handles on your new front door, but the seller handed over several unlabelled keys. You may be able to keep the hardware and change the working key. We can check before you buy new locks.
How much does it cost to rekey a lock?
The number and type of locks, their condition and the keys required affect the quote. Rekeying suitable hardware can cost less than replacing the whole lock, but it isn't the answer to every problem.
Count the locks you want changed, including a separate deadbolt if the door has one. A photograph can also help describe what's fitted when you enquire.
Can all my house locks use the same key?
They may be able to, provided the locks are compatible. This is called having locks keyed alike. Different brands or key systems may require some hardware changes. Burlington Locksmiths can look at the doors you use most and explain what would be involved. You don't have to include every cupboard and shed just because you're sorting out the front and back doors.
My key turns, but the door won't open. Is the lock broken?
Possibly, but the symptom alone doesn't tell us which part is at fault. The handle, latch, internal mechanism or the way the door sits can all need checking. Avoid forcing the key. Describe what moves, what feels loose and whether the problem started suddenly or has been getting worse.
Can a smart lock go on my existing door?
Some can, but the fit needs checking first. The door thickness, existing holes and how the door closes all matter. A smart lock won't straighten a door that already catches.
Before choosing one, consider:
- Whether you want a keypad, phone access or both.
- How you'll get in if the batteries run flat.
- Who needs access and how easily you can remove it.
If you already have a model in mind, mention it before booking installation.
A former employee still has a key. Do I need new locks?
Not necessarily. Rekeying the affected locks may be enough if they are suitable and working well. Start by checking which doors that key opens. For an electronic system, the change may involve removing a code or credential instead. We need to know what is installed before recommending the work.
Can you help if my shop door won't lock at closing time?
Yes. Call Burlington Locksmiths and make clear that you can get in but cannot secure the premises. We'll check availability for an emergency visit.
Car Keys, Fobs and Locked Doors
Can a locksmith make a car key without the original?
For many vehicles, yes. Losing the only key does not automatically mean you need new vehicle locks. The make, model, year and key system determine what can be done. Let us know that all copies are missing when you enquire, so we can check the replacement and programming options for your car.
How much does a replacement car key cost?
A basic key, a key with a security chip and a proximity fob can involve different parts and work. The quote also depends on whether you still have a working key. For car key replacement in Burlington, have the vehicle details ready and check whether cutting and any required programming are included.
Where can I get a key fob programmed in Burlington?
Contact Burlington Locksmiths with the vehicle's make, model and year. We can check whether we support its key system and whether programming can be completed at the vehicle. If you're parked at Appleby GO, for example, give the parking location as well as the station name. The job still needs a compatibility check before a visit is confirmed.
Can you program a key fob I bought online?
Possibly. Check with us before buying it if you can. Fobs that look identical can have different electronics, and a used fob may not be reusable with another vehicle. Send the listing or part details when you enquire. That's easier than finding out after the parcel arrives that the fob won't work with your car.
My key fob has stopped working. Do I need a new one?
Not always. A weak battery is one possible cause, but damage or a vehicle-side issue can produce similar symptoms. If you have a spare, note whether that still works. Also mention whether the problem affects the door buttons, starting the car or both. Those details help narrow down what needs checking.
My keys are locked in the car. Can you help?
We offer car lockout help. Give us the location and vehicle details, and explain whether the keys are in the cabin or boot. Opening the car and replacing a lost key are separate jobs, so you may only need help getting back in. We'll check the situation and availability when you call.
Do I have to tow my car to a dealership for a new key?
Not always. Some key work can be completed where the vehicle is parked, depending on the car, required parts and programming access. Check with us before arranging a tow. If the work needs a dealer or another specialist, it's better to establish that while you're making the plan.
Have a question about your own lock? Call Burlington Locksmiths. You can describe it in everyday words, and we'll ask for any details we need. If you're booking a local locksmith for several jobs, keep a quick note of each one so we can discuss them together.
